Warning for Winter Van Drivers

Thursday, January 7 2010

It is that time of year again; cold weather can lead to treacherous driving conditions when frozen precipitation accumulates on the roadways. When ice or snow covers the roads, van drivers need to beware of the dangers of driving on snowy or icy streets.

Swinton, one of the United Kingdom’s lead sellers of van insurance offers the following tips for people who have to drive on wintry roads.
Van drivers should keep some kind of an emergency kit in their van should their van breakdown. In this kit they should keep: a mobile phone that is fully charged up, something for scraping ice, de-icer, flashilght, torch, blanket, boots, warm garments, jumper cables for battery, first-aid kit, and a shovel for snow.
Van drivers need to have their van serviced.
Make sure that the oil and water levels are correct, and make sure that water is protected by anti-freeze.
Do only needed travel.
Stay on roads that are well travelled that are more likely to be gritted.
Be on the look out for black ice and lay off the brakes if you start to slide, be sure to steer in the direction of the skid.
Use sunglasses to guard eyes from the glare of the winter sun
Do not be ashamed to turn around if the roads seem to be too hazardous.

Phil Moss of Swinton acknowledges that van drivers spend quite a bit of time on the road due to their jobs, so it is important that they are ready for bad weather.
