Vans Used as Offices on Wheels

Monday, November 16 2009

Vans these days are being used for more than just a mode of transportation. According to a survey conducted by Swinton, an UK commercial vehicle insurance company, seven out of ten van drivers stated that they utilize their van as an office on wheels. The results of this study of 1,500 van insurance customers found that 71% of these drivers used their van for a mobile office.

Of the activities that were conducted in the van, here are the most common office duties that were done:
1. Placing telephone calls
2. Checking emails and sending out emails
3. The storage of paperwork
4. Maintaining their diary

This survey from Swinton found that the item most commonly used in the van was the blackberry, in first place at 41%, next was laptops at 17%, and 12% reported doing paperwork inside their vans. In addition, the study also reported that on average, van drivers talked an hour and 23 minutes a week on their mobile phones.

While it may be a convenience to be able to do office related task in a van, Swinton is cautioning van drivers not to leave expensive equipment or work tools unattended overnight or while working.  Swinton has always tried to convey the importance of not leaving important tools in vans for an overnight period, and now is extending this reminder to include expensive electronic equipment such as laptops and mobile phones.
