With over three million vehicles on our highways and by experiencing a growth rate of nearly 40% over the pat ten years, the van fleet sector is sector that calls for some serious self-regulating. Having support from some of the biggest van fleet operators in the United Kingdom, the Freight Transport Association is seeking the establishment of an all encompassing and a realistic code of conduct that benefits businesses, has a positive impact on the environment and will benefit all those who use our roadways.

The Freight Transport Association’s Van Project Leader, Richard White stated that businesses and consumers alike depend upon the van industry, which currently implements wonderful examples of well-developed and proven working van practices. White also noted that by utilizing that knowledge and formalising it into an agreed conduct code, it is now a matter of getting all van operators, big and small to agree on the code.
Having been developed by the van industry to be used by the same, the Van Excellence Code seeks the sharing and formalizing of work practices that are currently in use by top companies within the sector. The aim of the code is to give mandatory and audited guidelines for all issues related to van operations that include key issues such as van driver behaviour, van safety and maintenance, and also risk assessed operation procedures.
With support and input from some of the biggest van fleet operations in the United Kingdom and a commitment from van manufacturers Mercedes, Nissan and Ford, the FTA feels confident that the Van Excellence Code will become the standard for van working practices in the years to come.
