Van Scrappage Plan

Thursday, November 12 2009

The UK’s recent vehicle replacement plan as announced in its budget for 2009, could prove to be beneficial for the Courier industry. Under the vehicle replacement plan the government will pay £2,000 towards the purchase price of a new vehicle when trading in a vehicle that is 10 years old or older. This can benefit van owners who are wishing to trade in their commercial vans since the plan also applies to commercial vehicles that weigh up to 3.5 tonnes. The cost of the discount will be split between the government and the vehicle manufacturer on a fifty-fifty basis.

With courier van drivers struggling in the floundering economy, any assistance with replacing older vehicles is gladly received. As van drivers take advantage of this program it will result in more environmentally friendly vans on the UK roadways.

The UK’s vehicle replacement plan is scheduled to run until March 2010, or until the government money set aside for the program runs out, whichever comes first. Qualifications for the program are as follows, the vehicle being scrapped must be 10 years old or older, and the owner must be a registered keeper for at the least one year. Germany has implemented a similar plan and has seen a significant increase in the sales of new vehicles.
