Swinton said that they seen a 13% increase in claims during the first week of January last year. Swinton believes that this was due in part to damage inflicted on vans by thieves trying to steal new tools that were received as Christmas presents left in vans overnight.

In order to help stop this occurrence, Swinton is telling van drivers that they should not leave tools in their vans overnight. It does not matter whether the tools or new or old; Swinton is advising van drivers to remove their tools from their vans to lower the risk of having their vans broken into, which has the possibility of evolving into an insurance claim.

Additionally, Swinton is advocating that van drivers take out tool cover to pay for their tools should someone break into their van and steal them.

Here are a few tips from Swinton to help a van break in from occurring:
If it is possible, van drivers should lock their vans in a secure place, such as a secure garage.
Take all of the tools out of a van during the overnight period.
Place a sticker on the van that reads, “No tools left in vehicle overnight.”

The main thrust of Swinton’s advice about tools in vans is, if you have tools in your van, please do not leave them overnight, take them out. In doing so, you may save your van from being broken into.
