Having a selection of 14 million books and 920,000 journal & newspaper titles, the British library amazingly hosts a fleet that has operated so safely that there are zero official crash stats.
However, even though the library holds such a good driving record and is the 45th organisation to achieve Better Business Champion status by the Driving for Better Business campaign, which is sponsored by the Government and managed by RoadSafe, Grey fleet procedures are next in line for a tightening up.

The British Library runs a fleet that is fielded by three Transporters vans from Volkswagen and an Estate car from Skoda that logs around 100,000 miles per year. Having two main sites located in London, this includes its main site at San Pancras. Across the nation, approximately 75 workers drive their own vehicles for business, this is the what is know as the grey fleet, most of the business drives by these workers are one-off trips. As a whole, the staff drives about 25,000 miles per year in their own vehicles. Workers that drive their own cars for library related business have to provide proof that they have the proper business insurance in place.

The British Library with their excellent safety record and now Better Business Championship status has put safety to the forefront of their fleet program. Going forward, as they implement new measures for the grey fleet, the library is seeking to further their safe driving practices to the employees who drive their own vehicles for library business.
