Sainsbury’s announces that they will be purchasing 50 electric vans for their online grocery delivery. With these 50 vans added to the 20 that they already employ, Sainsbury’s Supermarket’s fleet of electric vans will be the largest on the globe according to Smith Electric Vehicles.

The electric vans will be used around London, which means that 60% of people living in Central London will be receiving their groceries from someone driving an eco-friendly van.
The 3.5 tonne electric vans will operate out of ten of Sainsbury’s London stores and are scheduled to be on the road in March. The vehicles have been altered to conform to Sainsbury’s specifications for their online city deliveries. The vans are restricted to a speed of 40mph and can easily hit the required range of 60 miles a day. Additionally, the vans are equipped with a quick charging system.
To help the vans be more energy efficient, the vehicles have regenerative braking, which means as the van slow down drivers can recapture some of the energy used to assist in recharging the batteries. This process is much like the KERS system that is used by some Formula 1 racers.
When compared with a traditional van, the motors of electric vans are comprised of very few moving parts (usually three to four compared to a diesel motor that has more than 1,000 moving parts). This helps keep maintenance simple and to a minimum.
