Nearly 50 public fleets and fleets within the private sector, which include many of the top commercial vehicle operators in the United Kingdom, are leading the way in a Government sponsored campaign to cut the number of highway accidents that involve on-the-job drivers.

Even though, the official numbers from the Department of Transport reveal that casualties from crashes on the highways are seeing a consistent reduction, with a total of 2, 538 fatalities on Britain’s highways and 228, 367 people suffering injuries in 2008, which is the most recent year that has available figures, it has been estimated that up to one third of the casualties may have been workers on job-related travels
At the centre of the Governments move to cut down on work-related highway crashes and casualties is a programme known as the ‘Driving for Better Business’ campaign, which RoadSafe, an automotive industry-sponsored charity and one of the top forums for the promotion and the devising of safety solutions for highway safety, manages for the Department of Transport.
At the hub of the success for the implementation for this campaign is the bringing in of 42 high profile safety-minded fleets from the public and private sectors as well to show the practices that they use, with the goal of encouraging others to implement safe driving guidelines within their organisations.
Caroline Scurr, who directs the ‘Driving for Better Business’ campaign stated that reducing the number of highway accidents involving job-related drivers can result in much money being saved, greater efficiency within a business, and an improved image for an organisation.
