Under-inflated tyres is the cause of £0.7 worth of fuel being wasted each year by drivers throughout the United Kingdom. According to TyreSafe, more than one third of motorists in the United Kingdom are inflating their fuel costs and taking additional safety risks by not having the proper amount of air in their tyres. TyreSafe, the top tyre safety organisation in the United Kingdom, provided this information in a month when the average price for a litre of petrol hit an all time of high of 119.9p. It is estimated by TyreSafe that the amount of fuel that is needlessly wasted each year due to tyres being under-inflated is £0.7 billion. Having tyres properly inflated results in multiple benefits for motorists, benefits such as lower fuel costs, tyres not wearing out as fast, enhanced safety, and a reduction in CO2 emissions.

In a survey that was conducted by one TyreSafe member in the year prior, more than 4,500 vehicles had the inflation level of their tyres checked in a three- month span; an eye-opening 36% of the drivers were discovered to be driving with tyres that were under-inflated to the point of presenting a hazard to motorists. When a vehicle is running on under-inflated tyres, their rolling resistance increases, which means that it takes more energy to make them turn, this results in the engine using more fuel, making a vehicle less fuel-efficient. Another TyreSafe member’s calculations showed that when tyres are just 20% under-inflated that it can result in a vehicle using 3% more fuel.
In addition to fuel-efficiency being affected, under-inflated tyres compromise a vehicles safety. Under-inflated tyres are more prone to blowout, usually this happens at high speeds when heat can build up inside the tyre; also, the handling and grip of tyres are affected by not being properly inflated, which can result in erratic or unpredictable handling from the vehicle.
