Swinton did a poll of 1,200 of their online customers and learned that a nearly one out of five of them (18% ) had took to the roads with an invalid MOT certificate due to their failure to renew their MOT before the expiration date.

Failure to have a valid MOT certificate could cause a van insurance policy to be invalid, which could result in a large payout should the van driver be involved in a crash, and also could result in higher premiums on down the road.

Swinton Commercial gives the following advice to van drivers on keeping their MOT certificate up-to-date.
Set up your MOT a long time ahead of the expiry date, it is not a good idea to be calling garages the day before to book your MOT.
If for some reason the MOT fails and you are dissatisfied, request a VOSA appeal form.
If the appeal goes through, be ready for a thorough testing that will involve a VOSA representative, two independent testers and additionally a failing tester. This test can be as long as two hours.

According to Phil Moss of Swinton, having a valid MOT is required by law, and operating without one, on top of getting you in trouble with the police can also make your van insurance policy invalid as well. Phil wants van drivers to realize how important it is to notice their MOT renewal dates and to keep their MOT certificate up-to-date.
