Lobby Attack on Van CO2 Law Lacks Credibility

Monday, April 5 2010

The T&E reports that some of the best-selling vans in Europe are close to hitting the CO2 targets that the EU proposal for 2016 has laid out, this after making substantial improvements this year in the area of fuel efficiency. In spite of this information from the T&E, the automobile industry lobby continues to say that these proposals from the EU for reducing CO2 emissions are not realistic goals; the T&E cays that their claim lacks credibility.

The binding proposals laid out by the European Commission for CO2 emission targets for vans was released in October of 2009 and will undergo a discussion by national environment ministers in the middle of March. The proposal says that van producers need to reduce van CO2 emissions by 175 grams of carbon dioxide for every km travelled by the year 2016, this is a reduction of around 14% in comparison to the baseline in 2007 that was 203 grams.

Leading up the release of the CO2 reduction proposal, the automobile industries lobbying group, the ACEA, said that the proposed targets were totally unreachable. Additionally, the head of Volkswagen’s van division chimed in with a statement last month that the proposals were unrealistic.

As the debate goes on between the T&E and the automobile manufacturers and lobbyists, only time and hard data will show who the winner is in this great debate. Nevertheless, as for now, it appears that the T&E has a strong case, with van experts reporting that 2010 van models are making great strides toward hitting these targets
