John Lewis, First Store to Offer an Electric Minibus

Last Christmas, John Lewis Oxford Street presented shoppers with a green solution for travelling to the West End.

Last December, the John Lewis Oxford Street department store introduced a shuttle bus that runs off electricity; the minibus seats nine riders and is a business class van. The minibus will be run by a service known as the Green Urban Transport Sustainable initiative that will give shoppers an environmentally friendly solution to driving their vehicles into the middle of London.

One of the directors of the department store announced that John Lewis takes pride in being a leader by providing their customers and the forty-million shoppers that are expected to come to the West End over the holidays an eco-friendly and luxurious way to journey.

The electric GUTSi van sits on a Smith Edison chassis, made by Smith Electric Vehicles and in step with being a green van is constructed with quality, recycled materials. In addition to being a green van that is made of recycled materials, electrically powered and emits zero emissions, the GUTSi is a luxury van that has leathered covered seats, wi-fi connectivity and laptops.

At the time of the press release, John Lewis Oxford Street is the only department store that will be using the electric minibus. In the future, there are plans to extend the shuttle service to cover all of the John Lewis stores in London, with 20 of the electric vans expected to be up and running in the Capital in 2010.
