The planned January increase in fuel duty will no longer go ahead, after Chancellor George Osborne announced that the 3p rise would not be happening. In this same statement, he said that the further hike in fuel duty planned for August would now only be a 3 pence rise, rather than 5 pence.
There has been strong opposition to the proposed rise in charges from both the motor industry and the general public- an online petition against the increases gained over 100,000 signatures.
Suggestions have been made that fuel duty should be abolished entirely and replaced with wider spread congestion charges, but for now the situation hangs in the balance- the government has compromised over the issue.
