Dept. of Transport licence amendments

In a recent press release, DSA announced the new safety regulations for motorbikes, bus drivers, and lorry drivers. The Department of Transport working together with the Driving Standards Agency and the Vehicle Licensing agency has put forth propositions designed to improve the driving abilities and the safety of motorcyclist, lorry drivers, bus drivers and drivers who are new to towing medium trailers. These new propositions are part of a sounding on the implementing of new European laws that will take place 2013 concerning the issuing of licenses to a fore-mentioned drivers.

The new rules for trailer towing are the following- The proposition says that drivers with a regular category B licence will be allowed to tow a marginally larger trailer if they take an additional test or additional training. A restriction can also be expected on the overall size of a vehicle/trailer combo that can be on the road under a B+E licence.

The new rules for bus drivers and lorry drivers are the following-Presently, people who drive large buses and lorries have to do a licence renewal at five year intervals after the age of 45, additionally drivers in this age group have to undergo a full medical exam to prove that they are physically fit enough to drive a bus or a lorry. After 2013, people under 45 will have to prove their physical fitness and have to do a licence renewal at five-year intervals. However, the under 45 group will not have to submit a full medical exam and will just have to renew their photo at 10 year intervals.
