People who drive vans in Britain are being cautioned to take a close look at their insurance policy before climbing behind the wheel of another vehicle.

Swinton, one of the top van insurance retailers in the United Kingdom is letting van drivers know that they may not be covered to drive a different vehicle.

With most motor insurance policies, auto drivers typically are covered by a third party insurance to drive different cars, however, with commercial policies that may not always be the case. Commercial policies do not always provide their van insurance customers the same automatic cover that they sometimes get with a car insurance policy.

Swinton is admonishing van drivers and operators of any other commercial vehicles to read their policy closely and see what other vehicles that their insurance covers them to drive.

Swinton’s Commercial Vehicle Manager, Phil Moss states that if van drivers and commercial vehicle drivers think that they are covered to drive a different vehicle they could be sadly mistaken. He said a typical example of this could be a commercial driver who drives his van for business and assumes that his insurance policy will cover them if they drive one of their family member’s cars, and for the most part, it does not cover them.

Commercial van insurance policies are also different from average auto insurance policies in their coverage of personal belongings or tools. Commercial van policies are made to cover the van and different coverage is often needed to cover tools and any other articles that are carried in the van.
