In recent research released by the road safety charity, Brake, it was revealed that a majority of motorists admitted to driving at deadly speeds through towns and villages; the findings were released Thursday, May 13, by Brake in London at an international conference on driving too fast.

The findings found that 72 per cent of motorists that were surveyed said that they drove at 35mph or better in a 30mph zone, and 36 per cent said that they done this on a daily basis or at least one time a week.

According to Mary Williams OBE, the chief executive of Brake, there seems to be a massive amount of complacency with drivers who believe that they will be able to bring their vehicles to a stop in time if they are just exceeding 30mph by a small amount, however, the physics of speed us that they will not, and the number of casualties tell us that they do not.

Each day in Britain, there is eight youth (people aged between 0-19) that are killed or have received a serious injury while they are on foot or a bicycle. Many people may not realize it, but there is no safe speed for hitting a pedestrian or someone on a bike. A heavy object such as a car or a van can be fatal or cause serious injury at any speed.

Due to the amount of time that it can take to stop a vehicle, Brake’s recommends that the maximum speed that vehicles travel in towns and villages be 20mph. As a vehicle’s speed increases, the distance that it takes increases at a quicker rate. In countries where there is a low pedestrian death rate, 20mph is the default speed limit Brake is encouraging the United Kingdom to adopt the same safe limit.
