With overloading clearly being the offence that is committed by operators of light goods vehicles (LGVs), the Freight Transport Association (FTA) has just released their best practice guide to be used by transport mangers on dealing with the issue of safely securing loads and equipment in vans. The best practice guide give realistic, practical counsel for drivers, making compliance standards clearer and also helps to make their driving safer.

Alarmingly, the LGV overloading violation rate discovered by traffic enforcers rose from 55.1% in the year 2007 to 66.9% in the year 2009 (VOSA). It appears that there has not been a clear source of guidance on safely securing loads for LGVs.
Research on safely securing loads in LGVs was conducted by the Transport Research Laboratory TRL), who was commissioned by the FTA to conduct the studies. The research project was jointly funded by the FTA’s Utilities Working Group members that unlike former research, this research deals with the typical force that meets an LGV and its load in crash. The Department of Transport’s (Dft) code on load retention only deals with a deceleration force of 1G, which is typical in normal driving situations, a serious crash can be 20 times more forceful.
James Hookam of the Freight Transport Association remarked that as many of their members using vans as well as trucks, the FTA realizes that there is a strong need for guidance on safely securing loads, guidance that is clear and consistent.
